A woman who was jailed for thirty years after suffering health problems and a miscarriage has finally been freed.
After serving ten years of her erroneous 30-year sentence, 38-year-old El Salvadoran woman Elsy has finally been freed.
The mother was arrested back in 2011 and sentenced to three decades in prison after suffering a miscarriage and reporting an obstetric emergency in the country known for its strict views on abortion of all forms.
Following the complications with her health and the death of her unborn baby, Elsy was charged with aggravated homicide and sent to jail.
Now, the unfortunate woman has finally been freed – a move celebrated by the Citizen Group for the Decriminalization of Abortion in El Salvador.
“We celebrate Elsy’s release after 10 years. Her erroneous 30-year sentence for aggravated homicide is over. We must continue to fight tirelessly to free those who remain deprived of liberty,” Morena Herrera, the organization’s president, said.
“[Elsy] was separated from her son, who only had her. Now, more than 10 years later, she will be able to reunite with him and her family.”
According to the reports, nearly two hundred women had been prosecuted due to the country’s draconian anti-abortion laws in the last two decades.
While some sixty of these women have since been freed, five were granted freedom as a result of the last year’s ‘Free the 17’ campaign led by celebrities Kathryn Hahn, America Ferrera, and Milla Jovovich.
The campaigners called on the El Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele to free the 17 women, including Elsy, who were jailed after suffering miscarriages and other obstetric complications.
