A woman fell to her death while celebrating her engagement on a clifftop.
39-year-old Yesim Demir was visiting a scenic tourist spot in Turkey with her partner, Nizamettin Gursu, to celebrate the couple’s engagement and fast-approaching wedding day.
While enjoying a picnic retreat and watching the sunset on a clifftop at Polente Cape in Canakkale, the woman reportedly left her boyfriend briefly to retrieve some supplies from their car.
Moments later, Gursu heard screams and ran towards his fiancée only to discover that she had fallen off the cliff and plunged one hundred feet deep.
While the woman didn’t die immediately, she passed away later that evening after succumbing to her injuries.
“We chose the cliffs to have a romantic memory after the proposal. We drank some alcohol. Everything happened at once. She lost her balance and fell down,” Gursu told the local media of his trip to the scenic cliffside.
Following the tragedy at the seaside, the area was closed off to all visitors by the authorities. According to the police, the cliff has since been reopened to pedestrians and vehicles who will be allowed to visit the place “in a controlled manner.”
While the tragic death remains under investigation, foul play is not suspected.
“This is a place where everyone comes and watches the sunset,” a friend of Demir told the local media.
“However, the roads are very bad and there is no precaution on the edge of the cliff. A fence should be drawn here, precautions should be taken.”
Our thoughts remain with Yesim’s loved ones during this challenging time.
