A woman from Mexico broke her neck and suffered serious internal injuries while at the gym with her daughter.
A 42-year-old woman from Mexico has died after attempting to lift a 180kg barbell in front of her daughter, only for it to fall and crush her neck. The woman, who has not been named, was reportedly exercising with her daughter when the tragic incident occurred.
The fitness enthusiast tried to lift the gorilla-sized weight at Gym Fitness Sports gymnasium in Mexico but didn’t succeed and died for trying.
Surveillance video captured inside the training facility shows the woman stepping under the barbell, which appears to have at least four weighted plates on each end.
It shows the unnamed woman standing around with a girl, reported to be her daughter before she heads towards the barbell. A man is shown to be adjusting gym equipment nearby.
The woman fixes the barbell on her shoulder and tries to lift it but is crushed under its weight. It falls on her neck and she is left lying motionless. People are seen gathering around her to try and rescue her from underneath the equipment. When they manage to remove the barbell, she drops back on the floor.
The gym instructor, her daughter, and other gym-goers rushed to rescue her, but it was in vain as they realized she had died on the spot after being crushed by the heavy barbell while her daughter stood near her.
Paramedics from the Red Cross found the woman with no vital signs and declared her dead at the scene. Based on initial media reports, the women ages between 35 and 40 years old.
It is known that the victim’s daughter is severely affected psychologically after witnessing the tragic death of her mother and is receiving health support. Her daughter was still speechless and in need of treatment after what she saw.
The state prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the incident. The gym owner is also in custody to coordinate with the investigation. Authorities have yet to release the name of the victim.
Last May, a Queensland man almost died when the 120kg barbell he was lifting fell, pinning him down by his throat. Jason Layt lay there trapped for 17 seconds before other gym-goers noticed his distress and freed him.
In June 2021, a young student, 22, died suddenly in a gym reportedly after using a punching bag. He was given CPR by the gym staff, however, he was declared dead at the Royal Liverpool Hospital. The University of Liverpool student who was known as Ethan James Williams, originally from Cardiff had died because of blood clotting in his lung, according to reports in Mirror.
In another similar case, an Indian man, 28, who is known to be a regular gym-goer at a Gold Gym in Mumbai, the western Indian state of Maharashtra, collapsed during a workout. Reportedly, the man started to feel uneasy while working out on the bench press machine.
Weight training is primarily done to build stronger and bigger muscles, and barbells, dumbbells, and other weight machines are the equipment used to do so. It is always advised to ask the fitness trainer and then only lift weights according to their guidance.
