At least three of those who were injured suffered severe injuries, regional emergency services said.

“It was a tense few minutes, I’ve never experienced anything like it before,” he said.

“The tragedy happened just at the end of my session on the main stage, just below it, which was the most affected (area). It was a few moments of horror, I am still in shock.”

This comes as the worst drought to hit the continent in 500 years wreaks havoc across Europe, leaving lakes and rivers dry and dusty and causing wildfires.

Europe’s central, southern and western areas have experienced no significant rainfall in recent months.

France is currently experiencing its worst drought, with flames burning through pine forests and illuminating the sky with strong orange light.

Piotr Nieznanski, the conservation policy director at WWF Poland, said that it appears that an industry released a toxic chemical into the water and the low water levels caused by the drought has made it more dangerous for water creatures.

Calling on authorities to make an investigation, he said: “A tragic event is happening along the Oder River, an international river, and there is no transparent information about what is going on.”

Residents living near the river have also been warned not to touch the water.

In Serbia, the dry bed of Conoplkansko reservoir is already littered with dead fish that couldn’t survive the drought, while Italy’s largest lake is near its lowest level.
