The UK has recorded the hottest day in its history as wildfires took over the country and razed homes to the ground.
In the capital, the London Fire Brigade announced a ‘major incident’ after more than ten wildfires erupted in the outskirts and set countless buildings on fire.
According to the local reports, one of the hardest-hit places was the village of Wennington where at least five homes burned after the blaze presumably erupted at a nearby grassland.
As many as one hundred firefighters and 15 firetrucks were spotted combatting the out-of-control flames in the small village alone.
“A row of terraced houses and an area of scrubland are involved in the blaze. The Brigade was called at 1.06 pm. Fire crews from Dagenham, Deptford, Bethnal Green, Woodford, Lee Green, Forest Hill and surrounding fire stations are at the scene,” the officials confirmed.
Several other fires erupted throughout the UK and London as officials confirmed the highest-ever recorded temperatures.
In some places – such as Coningsby in Lincolnshire and London Heathrow Airport – the mercury hit temperatures as high as 40.3°C (104.54°F).
In many parts of southeastern UK, including London, the temperate soared to 40°C, whereas weather forecasts suggested there was a possibility the thermometers would reach up to 43°C today, far exceeding the temperatures in the rest of Europe or the rest of the world – including tropical countries – for that matter.
In one heartbreaking scene that took place near the burning village of Wennington, a woman was seen breaking into tears and being comforted by two men after her home presumably caught fire.
Amid the heatwave in Europe, wildfires have also been reported across France, Spain, and other countries.
Our thoughts remain with the victims of the fires.
