The wife of the 24-year-old man who was shot dead while carrying his child’s birthday cake has spoken out and revealed that her husband was unarmed.
Calogero Dueñes, 24, was shot dead outside a restaurant in Humble, Texas, after getting into an argument with a driver who allegedly nearly hit him after driving the wrong way.
The incident took place last Friday when the young man and his wife, Amber Uresti, paid a visit to the Chuck E. Cheese in Humble together with their daughters to celebrate the 6-year-old’s birthday.
According to the reports, Amber and her daughters entered the restaurant first, whereas Dueñes followed them with his daughter’s cake in his hands.
After getting into a quarrel with the reckless driver, the 24-year-old was fatally shot by the driver who made a quick getaway in his Ford vehicle.
Now, the young man’s grieving wife has spoken out and claimed that she can’t understand why this had happened because her husband was unarmed.
“I saw him walking towards us. I told the lady my husband was on his way. I pointed at him, and the instant I turned around, he came running in through the door and he kept saying, ‘I got shot! I got shot!’” Uresti told KTRK.
“He had no weapons. He was holding my daughter’s birthday cake. He had nothing on him. I don’t understand why.”
“I don’t understand how someone could do something like that. He was walking with a cake,” Amber added in an interview with KHOU.
As the heartbroken wife revealed, she and Dueñes grew up together and had been inseparable for the last ten years.
“I really don’t know what I’m going to do anymore. It’s really hard,” she said.
Now, the young lady has to deal not only with her grief but also with the grief of her young daughters who have been crying themselves to sleep every night since the tragic incident.
“There’s nothing I can tell her. There’s no words to tell her other than, ‘Daddy is with you in your heart. He loves you,’” Uresti concluded.
