The devastated wife of ABC News producer Dax Tejera was arrested for child endangerment only hours after he died of a heart attack.

According to reports, the couple were a block away from the Yale Club when Tejera collapsed and had to be taken to a hospital.

Their daughters, 2 and five months old, had been left alone in the hotel room before the husband was rushed to a hospital.

Only hours after Tejera died, his wife Veronica Tejera was arrested by NYPD officers and charged with two counts of ‘acting in a manner injurious to a child.’

But in a statement, she said that after her husband collapsed two days before Christmas, she ‘accompanied him in an ambulance to the hospital.’

She also apologized for leaving her children unattended, explaining: “We had two cameras trained on my children as they slept, and I monitored them closely in the time I was away from them. While the girls were unharmed, I realize that it was a poor decision.”

Veronica continued: “I asked both a close friend and my parents to rush to my children’s hotel room to attend to them as I monitored them by camera.

“The hotel would not allow my friend in and instead called the NYPD.”

She is currently mourning with the family of her late husband.

“Our family has suffered a terrible tragedy. I respectfully ask for privacy while my children and I mourn Dax’s death.”

Police reportedly received a call at 11 pm about ‘unattended children’ at 50 Vanderbilt Avenue in Manhattan.

They found “a two-year-old female and a five-month-old female were left alone inside of a hotel room for an extended period of time.”

Police said that Veronica was given a desk ticket which requires her to make a court appearance.

One internet user commented: “Sleeping children cannot be left alone. Ask the McCann family.”

Another wrote: “Cameras can’t babysit children. You have to be there in case something happens you’ll know from another room when they’re sleeping. This is negligence and she should not have them in her care.”

A third added: “He looked very young and fit to have heart problems.”
