At least one hundred people were killed and an additional one hundred and fifty were injured in a massive blaze that erupted at a wedding venue.
The shocking incident took place in Hamdaniya, Iraq, where a big wedding took place at an indoor venue. During the ceremony, fireworks were lit and the exterior of the wedding hall caught fire.
According to the preliminary investigation, the cladding that caught fire was illegal because it was highly flammable.
After the fire had spread throughout the wedding venue, at least one hundred people died as a result of getting trapped in the burning building. An additional 150 guests had to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns.
As of this writing, the final death toll remains unconfirmed but the authorities said they were expecting it to exceed one hundred casualties.
“All efforts are being made to provide relief to those affected by the unfortunate accident,” Saif al-Badr of the Health Ministry said.
The blaze represents one of the deadliest residential fires in history and exceeds the death toll of the notorious 2017 Grenfell Fire in London that resulted in 72 casualties.
An investigation into the blaze currently remains under investigation and it is yet to be confirmed why the illegal cladding was allowed on the exterior of the wedding venue.
In shocking pictures and footage from the scene, dozens of ambulances and fire trucks could be seen outside the burned building.
The armed forces also assisted in the evacuation and the transportation of the victims to the nearby hospitals.
