Ukraine’s first-ever war crime trial has taken place where a 21-year-old Russian tank commander was recently sentenced to life in prison.
According to local media reports, the 21-year-old man named Vadim Shishmarin may have been innocent looking but as a commander, his brutal actions cannot be denied.
The young commander is said to have shot dead an innocent Ukrainian civilian who was 62 years old in age. Bullets rammed into the civilian’s head, killing him in an instant, as reported by local media reports.
And just when the commander thought we would be able to get away with it, he was captured and arrested by Ukrainian soldiers and was held until the trial which finally began today.
The commander is believed to have admitted to the horrifying crime, adding how the civilian was unarmed and hence posed no threat to him or his forces. Yet, he chose to go ahead and shoot him dead.
Therefore, the 21-year-old pleaded guilty to the death of Oleksandr Shelipov during the starting war days.
Meanwhile, the commander tried to prove his innocence by claiming he had received orders from the back and hence had no other choice but to shoot the victim dead. But that excuse simply wasn’t good enough, as moments after that, his death sentence was read out loud in the court.
Such a high-ranked soldier firing shots at innocent civilians was deemed unacceptable by the judge who immediately, without any hesitation, declared the death sentence.
The suspect could be seen donning a blue and grey-toned sweatshirt as he stood silently and watched the proceedings of his trial unfold in front of him.
He was declared as being emotionless when the verdict was read out loud and it seemed almost as if he had accepted his defeat and knew what was coming his way.
