A US Marine veteran who served in World War II broke down in tears as discussed
Veteran Carl Spurlin Dekel, who celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by his family and friends, couldn’t contain his emotions as he discussed the current state of America.
He said that while serving the country in the war was the most important thing he did, soldiers who were killed had not died for the America of today.
“People don’t realize what they have,” he told Fox 13.
“The things we did and the things we fought for and the boys that died for it, it’s all gone down the drain. Our country is going to hell in a hand-basket,” Dekel expressed.
He broke down in tears as he talked about the contrasts between the current state of America and the country he grew up in.
“We haven’t got the country we had when I was raised, not at all,” he expressed. “Nobody will have the fun I had. Nobody will have the opportunity I had.
“It’s just not the same and that’s not what our boys, that’s not what they died for.”
Speaking to Fox 13, Dekel had lived a good life and suggested that his appreciation for all the little things are the reason for his good health and longevity.
He continued: “I really believe in this whole world and believe everything is beautiful. I mean if I wake up in the morning and see these plants, and all of those flowers, and the green grass in the ground, that’s beautiful.”
He also showed his medals from his time in the Marines.
His statements came the same day Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams, the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from WWII, died at the age of 98.
He was surrounded by his family at a hospital named after him.
Also a US Marine, Williams received his medal from former President Harry Truman in 1945.
