Back on May 24, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos of Uvalde, Texas, stormed Robb Elementary School and killed 19 children and 2 teachers with his rifle.

After the gunman was finally put down by the authorities, his body was taken to a local morgue where it remained for several weeks because no funeral home in the town was willing to accept it.

In the days and weeks following the mass shooting that rocked the nation, Uvalde’s two funeral homes, Hillcrest Memorial and Rushing-Estes-Knowles, struggled with arranging the funerals for 21 victims killed by Ramos.

They now also revealed they refused to take in Ramos’ body to avoid causing further pain to families shattered by the mass killer.

“All of our staff grew up in Uvalde County and attended school in Uvalde County and believe that everyone deserves a dignified and respectful funeral service,” Rushing-Estes-Knowles managing funeral director Taylor Michelle Massey explained in an interview with The Houston Chronicle.

Massey continued: “Under the circumstance, we did not feel it would be appropriate or in the best interest of the families for which we were caring to take custody of the remains of the individual that caused their pain.”

Meanwhile, Uvalde County coroner Eulalio ‘Lalo’ Diaz Jr. confirmed that he was struggling to dispose of the shooter’s body following the autopsy which was performed three days after he was shot dead by a cop.

“Once they got to him, the funeral homes in town said, ‘We don’t want to deal with him,’” Diaz said.

It reportedly wasn’t until nearly one month after the shooting that Diaz managed to arrange for Ramos’ body to be taken to a morgue in Lockhart, some 165 miles away. The body was later cremated in San Antonio before his funeral in Crystal City south of Uvalde.
