Ukrainian fathers have shared how they will defend their country against Russian invaders as they undergo training in a newly formed ‘Dads Army’.
Property developer Volodymyr and IT entrepreneurs Andriy, Volodymyr and Slavik were enjoying their comfortable lives until Putin ordered his army to attack their Ukraine.
But the four dads – all in their mid-30s – did not hesitate to defend their home, swapping their keyboards for weapons and spending their nights patrolling the city looking for saboteurs and spies.
Speaking to Mail Online, Slavik Kizyma said: “We all have young children but we are not afraid of dying. We did not want this war but we will win this war.
“Any Russians that come to our town we will kill them. Or we will die trying.”
Men across the country joined the Territorial Defense Force when Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for volunteers to protect the country.
Factory workers, teenagers, businessmen, and even grandfathers are manning check points at the entrance to all cities and towns, patrolling the streets searching for any Russian spies and saboteurs.
The Dads Army has allowed the Ukrainian military to send experienced troops to the front-line. Volunteers are trained how to load and fire a Kalashnikov rifle as experienced soldiers give them instructions on how to hide from gun-fire and search for weapons.
Thee groups are mostly patriotic amateurs and will be the last line of defense against Russian tanks.
“Now we are at the road check points the regular army soldiers are free to go the front line and fight,” Slavik said. “But if they Russian come to our town we will fight them to the last man.”
Slavik continued: “At night we spend six hours at the check points on the main roads or we spend four hours patrolling the city streets.
“Then we sleep for a few hours and go to the office about lunchtime.
“We know that the Kremlin has sent many spies into Ukraine and it is our job to stop them.”
Men like the four fathers say they have no other choice but to fight.
