In an update of losses suffered by the Russian army over the past 11 days, Ukraine’s military command also claimed that 2,000 units of weapons and equipment had been either seized, destroyed, or abandoned.
It includes 285 tanks, other armored vehicles, 44 aircraft, and 48 helicopters, including the Sukhoi Su-25 attack aircraft.
Pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces have blamed each other after the second attempt to establish a humanitarian corridor out of Mariupol have collapsed on Sunday after shelling resumed.
Residents of the port town have been sleeping in bomb shelters and have been without food, water, and power after Russian troops encircled surrounding areas, authorities say.
However, Russia’s Defense Ministry said that 498 Russian soldiers had died in Ukraine since the beginning of Moscow’s military operation there, Reuters reported quoting Russia’s RIA news agency. It was the first time that Moscow had put a figure on its casualties.
Reports said that Ukraine’s ability to keep flying air force jets is a visible demonstration of the country’s resilience in the face of attack and has been a morale booster, both to its own military and Ukraine’s people, experts told news agency Reuters.
Russia has fired more than 500 missiles at Ukrainian targets since the start of the invasion. The figures provided by Ukraine have not been independently confirmed, and there has been some skepticism as to whether the numbers may be inflated.
However, earlier this week, at least two western military officials said they believed Ukraine’s estimates of Russian casualties is to be largely accurate.
The number of Ukrainian soldiers killed in battle is currently unknown, however, in an update provided last week, the United Nations warned that hundreds of civilians had died during the first week of the invasion as Russia ramped up its attacks on cities.
Residential neighborhoods in Kharkiv, Mariupol, Chernihiv, Sumy, and elsewhere have come under sustained shelling and missile attacks as Russia’s bombardment escalate, leaving civilians to hide in underground bomb shelters for days.
Western officials told AFP: “Although Russia claims it has full air superiority, Ukraine’s air defenses around the capital Kyiv and in other areas appear to be degraded but still working.”
A US defense official said that Ukraine still has a “significant majority” of its military aircraft available twelve days after Russian forces started their invasion of the country.
As the United States and Germany announced military aid to Ukraine last Saturday, more and more nations stepped forward to help the war-hit nation with defense supplies.
Several countries, including France, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Portugal, and the Netherlands, are also providing military aid like stinger air defense missiles, anti-tank weapons, and artillery ammunition to Ukraine to fight Russian forces.
Russia has reportedly lost significant amounts of equipment. As of 12 hours ago, Independent confirmed losses of military vehicles stood at 725, including 107 tanks, with 10 airplanes and 10 helicopters confirmed to have been downed. Ukraine claims it has destroyed more than 80 Russian planes and helicopters.
According to the UK Ministry of Defense, Russian efforts to quickly encircle and capture key cities have been hampered by a combination of significant logistical issues and a stronger than expected resistance from Ukraine, which announced on Friday that it planned to launch counter-offensives to push back Russian advances.
