Eight people were confirmed dead after a Ukrainian plane carrying several tons of weapons crashed in Greece.
According to the reports, 11 tons of weapons including land mines and mortar shells were on board Antonov An-12, a Ukrainian military transport aircraft, when the plane crashed in Greece.
The aircraft owned by Ukraine and operated by a Ukrainian crew was reportedly transporting Serbian weapons to Bangladesh.
It has been confirmed that the weapons destroyed in the crash were made in Serbia and bought by the defense ministry of Bangladesh. Ukraine merely helped with the transport of the weapons by lending a plane.
After the aircraft crashed in Greece, a large explosion resulting in a fireball was spotted from the sky.
All eight crew members were killed in the blast.
When the flames subsided, military personnel wearing hazmat suits were spotted surveying the area for signs of chemical spills and nuclear material.
Meanwhile, firefighters who were present at the scene reported the feeling of a burning sensation in their lips caused by ‘white dust’ that was in the air at the scene of the crash.
“We don’t know what has been affecting us,” Marios Apostolidis, a fire department coordinator, said.
Speaking out about the tragic disaster was also a local resident who told ERT that he knew something was off the moment he heard the transport plane’s engine.
“At 10.45 pm I was surprised by the sound of the engine of the aircraft. I went outside and saw the engine on fire,” the man said.
According to the mayor of Paggaio, a nearby town, the crash took place just a mile away from a populated area.
As of this writing, the exact cause of the crash remains unknown, but engine failure is suspected to have played a major role in the incident.
