Two people have been killed after a mid-air crash involving two planes at an airport north of Brisbane.
Queensland Police have confirmed that a man and a woman in their 60s lost their lives after the two light planes collided ‘low to the ground’ at an airfield.
The pilot of one of the planes survived and got out of the wreckage.
Emergency responders rushed to Caboolture Airfield after reports of the collision between two aircraft.
Paramedics, firefighters and police arrived at the scene where they found debris strewn across the airfield.
Photos and videos from the scene show two destroyed planes surrounded by emergency responders and debris scattered all over the airfield.
Superintendent Paul Ready told reporters: “There has been a loss of life which is tragic. We’re at the initial part of the investigation trying to confirm who was aboard those light aircraft and that will continue.”
“It did occur low to the ground at the eastern end of the airfield,” Supt. Ready said, adding it was remarkable one of the pilots survived.
“Investigators are on scene. They are talking to the pilot of the other aircraft and once we get that information we will be in a better position to identify what has occurred,” he added.
Queensland police minister Mark Ryan worried that many people have witnessed the collision.
“I know the Caboolture airfield is a very busy place,” he expressed.
“There’s usually a lot of people there and obviously there’ll be people who have been impacted by witnessing this event. So there’ll be support provided for those people as well.”
Paramedic Matthew Davis described the scene as ‘confronting’ and ‘extremely traumatic’ for emergency responders.
A spokesperson for the airfield confirmed that the aircraft involved were registered.
