The tragic deaths of two young models at luxe downtown apartments in Los Angeles are ‘not related,’ police said after rumors have swirled online about a serial killer on the loose.
A police representative said that the deaths of Nichole Coats, 32, and Maleesa Mooney, 31, are believed to be unrelated despite the similarities.
Coat was found lifeless in her apartment in South Grand Avenue on September 10 while Mooney’s body was discovered in her South Figueroa Street apartment only two days later.
As LAPD investigates their deaths, family members of the young women have expressed their concerns that there is a potential serial killer in the area.
Police confirmed in a statement that while the women’s occupations, races, ages, and manners of death are similar, the cases are being investigated separately.
“Thus far, there is no evidence to suggest that the deaths of Ms. Coats and Ms. Mooney are related to one another,” a representative told KTLA.
This comes after Coats’ grieving family told KTLA that she was found in an unrecognizable state.
“I couldn’t recognize her,” May Stevens, Coats’ aunt, said. “I believe it was murder, I really do. One of her legs was up in the air in a kicking position. That’s not somebody who just laid in their bed and died.”
Mooney’s aunt and father found her inside her apartment. Her mother, Sharon Coats, said: “I don’t know who she went out with or what transpired there. I have no idea, but I’m going to find out.”
The grieving mother added: “If you’re out there, you’re going to get caught. You’re messing with the wrong person.”
