Two children are feared to be dead after up to six kids fell through the ice while playing on a frozen lake.
Four youngsters have been rushed to a hospital suffering a cardiac arrest after they were rescued from the lake.
Specialist police divers continue to search the water under the torchlight as two more children are yet to be found.
Emergency services rushed to the scene at Babbs Mill Park in Kingshurst at around 2 pm after reports of two children, said to be aged under 12, fell through the ice while playing on a frozen lake.
Their friends reportedly ran onto the lake and tried to save them, witnesses said.
Officers confirmed four children were fighting for their lives and the search continues as two more children are still missing.
The Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the search would continue but said the activity would no longer be a rescue operation.
Four children were taken to hospital in critical condition. Two were rushed to Birmingham Children’s Hospital while the others were taken to Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.
One police officer had been taken to hospital with hypothermia but is expected to recover fully.
West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service area commander Richard Stanton said: “When the fire service arrived at the scene, we were made aware there were up to six people in the water.
“After rescuing the four children, we have continued the search and rescue operation to confirm whether there were any more in the water.”
He continued: “The specialist medical advice we have been given on the scene, given the temperature of the water, given the age of those who entered the water and the amount of time they have been in there, this would no longer be a search and rescue operation.”
