A suspect in the 1996 Tupac Shakur murder has been arrested.
60-year-old gang leader Duane ‘Keefe D’ Davis was taken into custody on Friday as Los Angeles authorities charged him with murder using a deadly weapon.
The arrest comes years after the gang boss first bragged about his involvement in the rapper’s death.
Following the news, Tupac’s brother, Mopreme Shakur, slammed LA murder detectives for taking so long to find enough evidence to bring Davis in.
“We have been through decades of pain. They have known about this guy, who been running his mouth, for years,” he said as he called the news of the arrest bittersweet.
“So why now? For us, this is not over. We want to know why, and if there were any accomplices.”
According to Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo, Davis stands accused of working as the “on-site commander” who “ordered the death” of the then-25-year-old music icon.
Meanwhile, Homicide Lt. Jason Johansson described the suspect as the “shot caller” and “leader” while admitting that many facts surrounding the case were already known to the police in the first few months of investigation back in 1996.
Unfortunately, the investigation at the time hit dead waters and it wasn’t until 2018 that efforts to bring the culprit to justice were revived.
“We knew this was likely our last time to take a run at this case to successfully solve this case and bring forth a criminal charge,” Johansson added while admitting that Davis’s admissions to his involvement in the murder helped them make an arrest.
The case, however, is “far from over,” Sheriff Kevin McMahill. The authorities will now work on building a “successful prosecution.”
“It has often been said that justice delayed is justice denied. In this case, justice has been delayed, but justice won’t be denied,” District Attorney Steve Wolfson said.
