Several people died and dozens were left injured after a passenger train derailed completely.
The tragic incident took place in Missouri where an Amtrak train carrying 243 people from Los Angeles to Chicago derailed completely after colliding with a dump truck.
According to the preliminary reports, the passenger train plowed into the truck that was blocking an uncontrolled public crossing near Mendon.
After the collision, the train’s two locomotives and eight cars derailed and toppled over, leaving concerned passengers in panic.
While the emergency services remain on the scene, all injured passengers have already been transported to hospitals for treatment.
It is believed that three people died and at least 50 suffered injuries as a result of the derailing.
In shocking videos and photos from the scene of the accident, frantic passengers could be seen escaping the wreck through broken windows.
“So thankful for the people here, safely at the Northwestern high school near Mendon. This town pulled together to help everyone,” one passenger, Dax McDonald, tweeted as he revealed that the victims have taken refuge at a local high school.
Meanwhile, Missouri Governor Mike Parson asked the nation to “join us in praying for all those impacted.”
Speaking out was also Steve Aubert of the East Contra Costa Fire Department who suggested that the uncontrolled crossing was a recipe for disaster.
“It’s a bad crossing. It’s just a recipe for disaster unfortunately,” the fire marshal said.
The tragic news comes just one day after an Amtrak train collided with a vehicle in Brentwood, California, and resulted in three casualties.
The investigation into both incidents remains ongoing.
