At least 29 people were killed in a horrific head-on collision involving a passenger train and a cargo train.
According to the reports, the incident took place in the Greek region of Thessaly where a passenger train traveling from Athens to Thessaloniki collided with a freight train bound from Thessaloniki to Larissa.
Early reports suggest that at least 29 people were killed in the crash, whereas 85 or more were left injured.
Governor Konstantinos Agorastos has since spoken out and told SKAI TV that the crash was “very strong.” He also revealed that the first two cars of the passenger train were “almost completely destroyed” upon contact.
“It was a very powerful collision. This is a terrible night… It’s hard to describe the scene,” Agorastos said.
“The front section of the train was smashed… We’re getting cranes to come in and special lifting equipment clear the debris and lift the rail cars. There’s debris flung all around the crash site.”
The governor also revealed that the remaining passengers were already transported to Thessaloniki via buses.
“It was like an earthquake,” one witness recalled in an interview with ERT.
Another told SKAI TV that “there was panic in the carriage” and that “people were screaming” all around him.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the fire department revealed that the search for victims continues.
“The evacuation of passengers is underway in very difficult conditions given the severity of the collision of the two trains,” Vassilis Varthakogiannis said.
Our thoughts remain with the victims of the train collision and their families during this challenging time.
