A young girl died in a horrific traffic accident after a semi-trailer truck plowed into a school bus carrying several students.
The deadly collision took place in Arizona on Sunday morning, at around 9.30 am, when a group of students was traveling in a school bus on Interstate 40 near Sanders.
According to the preliminary reports, the bus was hit by a tractor-trailer while the passengers of the bus – including Holbrook Indian School students and staff – were on a field trip.
As the Arizona Department of Public Safety revealed, 19 people were on the bus when the vehicle was struck and pushed into another van.
It has since come to light that 17-year-old Kiarra Gordon was killed in the crash. Six more passengers of the school were injured.
Kiarra was identified by her aunt, Falonna Ashley, who revealed that the teen had just celebrated her 17th birthday. She is survived by three younger siblings.
“She had a beautiful soul. She’s from Wide Ruins, a small community on the Navajo Nation. She was focused on education and was thinking about what to do after high school,” Ashley said.
The crash currently remains under investigation. It is not clear if the driver of the semi-trailer truck will face any charges.
“This is a very sad day for the Holbrook Indian School community. Our concerns now are for our parents and families as we uphold and grieve with them,” Holbrook Indian School said in a statement after the accident.
“We ask that you would be patient and respectful as we work through this as a school community, and we solicit your prayers on behalf of everyone impacted by this tragedy.”
