A cruel boyfriend who beat his partner’s toddler to death has been jailed for life.
Kamran Haider, 39, was found guilty of the murder of Nusayba Bint-Umar, 16-month-old, after her mother, Asiyah Amazir, told the court she had heard the sound of a slap at their home. Haider who refused to attend court for the sentencing was ordered to serve a minimum of 20 years behind bars.
Following the attack, Amazir, called 999 and wrongly claimed her daughter had fallen ill on a bus, the Old Bailey heard. Nusayba, who weighed only 7.7 kilos, suffered a fit and was rushed to King’s College Hospital.
Medics battled to save her but despite their best efforts, Nusbaya’s injuries were so severe her life support was withdrawn four days after the attack.
When Haider was arrested and charged after the death, he denied murder and cruelty to a child and attended a three-week trial at the Old Bailey. He was found guilty on Monday and jailed for life today.
Last September 13, a judge said: “It was clear he was physically engaged with Nusayba, this is likely the time she sustained the injuries from which she died.”
Amazir took Nusayba to the hospital and was treated for a “large area of swelling and bruising over her right eye”. Despite a safeguarding concern being raised, she was discharged the following day and Ms. Amazir returned to Haider’s house in Ilford, east London.
Whilst she had become aware that her boyfriend was “jealous” of the attention she gave her daughter, she still did not believe him capable of physically harming Nusayba at this point.
The pair had begun a relationship after meeting on an online dating site. Amazir soon moved in with her partner to help him at his illegal dog breeding site at the home address.
On the day of the murder, Amazir got up to tend to the dogs when she heard Nusayba crying, as she went towards her room, she heard Haider say “shut up, Nusayba” and a slapping sound.
Amazir left and called an ambulance from the bus stop at the end of the road. She told the operator her daughter started having a fit on a bus, only later disclosing she was scared of Haider, the court was told.
When paramedics arrived, it was clear Nusayba was “gravely ill” and was taken to the hospital. Haider had denied having any physical contact with the little girl, but on Monday a jury found Haider guilty of murder and child cruelty in his absence.
Amazir said in a statement: “Nusayba was subjected to the most horrible experiences at the hands of this man towards the end of her life. I will never forget the events that led to her death for as long as I live. I vividly remember the things she suffered, and that noise she made on the last day of her life will haunt me forever.”
Prosecutor Edward Brown QC previously said that Nusayba’s death was caused by “violent shaking” and impact.
In her sentencing remarks, Judge Cheema-Grubb told the court: “It was not an accident, it was a gross breach of trust by an adult against a defenseless baby. It is clear to me that Kamran Haider wanted Ms. Amazir’s assistance with his dog breeding business and her child got in the way.”
“He resented the attention Nusbaya needed from her mother. I have no doubt that he had punished Nusayba harshly and had assaulted her on more than one occasion,” Judge Cheema-Grubb added.
