Officials have confirmed the death of five Titan crew members after parts of the OceanGate submersible were found.
On Thursday, the search for the missing sub that was on a voyage to visit the Titanic wreckage came to a tragic end as debris from the vessel was discovered on the ocean floor.
According to the US Coast Guard, it is believed that a “catastrophic implosion” of Titan occurred when the sub was just 1,600 feet away from the Titanic.
While the cause of the implosion remains unclear, the officials have confirmed that the crew must have died immediately.
As of this writing, it remains unclear if the bodies of the five crew members can be recovered or when this will happen.
It is believed that Titan imploded just some two hours after its journey began when the vessel lost all contact with its mothership.
Previously, military planes using sonar buoys raised hopes of rescue after detecting banging noises that were thought to be SOS sounds made by Titan’s crew.
Since the latest findings, all five crew members have been officially confirmed dead.
The victims include OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush, British billionaire Hamish Harding, French Navy veteran Paul-Henri PH Nargeolet, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, and Dawood’s 19-year-old son, Suleman.
“This is an incredibly unforgiving environment down there. The debris is consistent of a catastrophic implosion of the vessel. We’ll continue to work and search the area down there – but I don’t have an answer for prospects at this time,” deep-sea expert Paul Hankin, who is working in the search for the crew, said.
