A grieving mother of a Texas school massacre victim was told that her daughter could have survived the shooting if police had responded faster.
Her daughter, who was among the 21 people killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde after an 18-year-old gunman opened fire, bled to death after being shot in the kidney.
Speaking to CNN on Sunday, State Sen. Ronald Gutierrez said that the young girl who had been shot by a bullet might have survived.
“Her child had been shot by one bullet through the back through the kidney area,” Gutierrez said. “The first responder that they eventually talked to said that their child likely bled out. In that span of 30 or 40 minutes extra, that little girl might have lived.”
He also said that “many things went wrong” when cops responded to the shooting, adding that he was ‘disgusted’ by police’s failure to take action.
On Thursday, police admitted that officers did not rush into the school right away to find the shooter, Salvador Ramos, during the attack as they feared that they might be killed. They also suggested that they deliberately locked the gunman in the classroom where he killed 19 students and two teachers.
Ramos likely shot the students in the first four minutes of the attack. However, none of them were rescued from the building until more than an hour later, reports said.
At least two children were taken to a hospital but had died upon arrival.
According to the US Department of Homeland Security, a person can bleed to death in less than 5 minutes.
The US Justice Department announced that it will conduct a Critical Incident Review of the law enforcement response to the massacre.
Gutierrez argued that the mistakes may have led to the passing of many students.
“The protocols were breached. The active shooter protocols dictate that you go in,” he added, nothing that within minutes of the gunman opening fire, cops were already on scene. “First there were seven officers, by 12.03pm there were 19 officers. So many things went wrong here.”
Border Patrol agents also arrived but they were told by police not to go inside, a law enforcement official told The New York Times.
A little girl who died from the shooting made at least seven 911 calls asking for help after Ramos started shooting at them at around 11:30 am. But police did not breach the classroom until 12:50 pm.
