A Texas gunman who fatally opened fire and shot down a police officer has been acquitted of murder.

According to local media reports, David Wilson was found not guilty after he opened fire on a cop that happened to be checking a security alarm at his residence.

The jury delivered the ‘not guilty’ verdict in the much talked about David Wilson trial, after deliberating on the decision for nearly one and a half hours.

If convicted of killing officer Nathan Heidelberg from the Midlands, he would have to face life in prison.

On the other hand, news reports confirmed how Wilson boldly stated that he mistook the police officer as a burglar and that was the only reason he shot him down, as a means of self-defense, when the cop entered his home’s premises to check the alarm.

The incident took place during the early hours of the morning on March 5th of last year.

Meanwhile, prosecutors explained to the jury how the cop identified himself while he was still standing outside Wilson’s front door. However, at that time, Wilson was hiding inside a closet.

In the same way, a Texas Ranger and another police trainee that happened to be present on the scene spoke about how it may have been possible that the accused failed to hear officer Heidelberg’s announcement.

For those who may not be aware, Midland is a small-sized city that’s located in Western Texas, just an hour’s drive away from the border of New Mexico.

Wilson’s attorneys informed the court that their client had no idea that the victim was a cop, he instead mistook him for being an intruder and for that reason should be excused for acting in self-defense during the predawn hours of March in 2019.
