An 18-year-old died of a broken heart only hours after his best friend was killed in a sudden fall while they were having a vacation in Greece.
Andrew O’Donnell and Max Wall were recent graduates from St. Michael’s College and were celebrating the end of their exams when they went on a trip with their friends.
But during a night out, O’Donnell got separated from his friend and was reported missing.
O’Donnell’s body was then discovered the next day on rocky terrain. According to reports, the teen slipped and suffered a fatal head injury.
Max, who had a pre-existing heart condition, suddenly collapsed after hearing about the tragic death of his friend.
The grieving teen’s condition deteriorated and despite doctor’s efforts to save him, he died at a hospital.
Speaking to The Mirror, a local police official said: “We understand that Max who was discovered in the port had a history of heart problems.
“Friends who were with him described him collapsing on hearing about Andrew. They were close. This is about as near as it gets to an ancient Greek tragedy.”
When O’Donnell failed to return to the accommodation, police searched the area and found his body in a gully in Germanoli.
A source on the island said: “The autopsies will tell us more although right now we are ruling out anything suspicious.”
The principal of St. Michael’s College, Tim Kelleher, said in an interview with RTE’s Morning Ireland: “We’re absolutely devastated, the entire community is reeling with the news over the last 24 hours.”
Max was described as ‘very bright,’ passionate about rugby, and had the world at his feet, and Andrew was remembered as a ‘fantastic young man, great sportsman, and fantastic footballer.’
