The teacher who was shot in the chest by a 6-year-old student has been identified and pictured following a near-death experience.
25-year-old Abby Zwerner was teaching her class at Richneck Elementary School in Virginia on Friday when a young boy pulled out a gun and shot her in the chest.
According to the reports, the 6-year-old stole the gun from his mother’s home before hiding it in his backpack and smuggling it into his school.
The authorities also revealed that Abby remains at the hospital but is in stable condition. She is allegedly already awake and talking to her family.
As the police confirmed, the shooting was intentional and the teacher was a victim of a targeted attack.
Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew further claimed that the shooting remains under investigation and that it is yet to be determined whether the boy’s mother will face any charges.
Praising the teacher’s heroic actions, the police chief revealed how Zwerner ensured that all of her students were safe before she tried to help herself.
After the horrific shooting, the “combative” 6-year-old student was detained by another member of the staff. He was later taken to the police station where he was questioned alongside his mother.
While it remains unclear how the child obtained his mom’s gun, it was revealed that the firearm was purchased legally.
Recalling the tragic incident, the grandmother of one of the students insisted that one child was showing off golden bullets at school days before the shooting.
“The parents outside stated that their child told them a kid brought golden shiny bullets to school and was thinking about bringing his gun. The student told the parent, who informed the school,” she told DailyMail.com.
“And the school just yesterday got back to the parent saying the parent of the kid said it was a nerf bullet and the parent said nerf bullets aren’t shiny and gold.”
