The 19-year-old university student who tragically died in the Titanic submarine ‘implosion’ has revealed that the teen was ‘terrified’ about the expedition and only joined the trip to please his dad for Father’s Day.
Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman were two of the five people onboard Titan, which suffered a ‘catastrophic implosion’ during its trip to the wreckage of the Titanic.
The other victims were British billionaire Hamish Harding, French Navy veteran Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.
Mr. Dawood’s sister, Azmeh Dawood – the vice chairman of Engro Corporation – has spoken out and revealed that her nephew ‘wasn’t very up for it’ but wanted to please his father.
“I am thinking of Suleman, who is 19, in there, just perhaps gasping for breath … It’s been crippling, to be honest,” she told NBC News.
“I feel disbelief. It’s an unreal situation.”
Azmeh also said that she felt like they have been caught in a bad film with a countdown “but you didn’t know what you’re counting down to.”
Azmeh admitted that she wouldn’t go on the Titanic submersible even if she would be given a million dollars.
Suleman was a student at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.
Before the announcement of the victims’ death, Principal and Vice Chancellor Sir Jim McDonald posted: “I write to you with a heavy heart to share the news that one of our students, Suleman Dawood, is a passenger on board the submersible that is missing in the North Atlantic.
“We are deeply concerned about Suleman, his father and the others involved in this incident. I know you will join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to their families and loved ones.”
This comes after Rear Admiral John Mauger of the US Coast Guard said during a press conference: “The implosion would have generated a significant, broadband sound that the sonar buoys would have picked up.”
Families were left even more devastated after experts said that it would be almost impossible to recover any of the victims’ remains.
