A 19-year-old student tragically died after he got into a stranger’s vehicle thinking it was his Uber.
Carson Senfield, a University of Tampa student, just celebrated his 19th birthday when he was shot dead at 1am after entering a stranger’s car.
He died after being shot in the upper body but the unidentified shooter hasn’t been arrested as the State’s Attorney is yet to decide whether the driver was justified in shooting the teen under Florida’s ‘Stand Your Ground Law.’
The controversial law allows people to use deadly force to defend oneself if they believe that they are in imminent danger.
Carson was pronounced dead at the scene and the motorist is cooperating with Florida police.
According to reports, the teen had just got out of an Uber that drove him near his family home on West Arch Street when he called for another vehicle.
When he saw a car, he immediately jumped inside where he was shot by the shocked driver, who said he was in fear of his life, investigators said.
Tampa Police Department said that the motorist wasn’t arrested and it is now up to the State Attorney’s Office to decide whether the driver was justified in his actions or not.
Carson’s grieving father Darren Senfield said to WGRZ: “To us, the details will play themselves out. We don’t have our son, we’re mourning, we’re heartbroken, we’re devastated.
“It was a senseless tragedy that we’re still trying to figure out, but at this point, it doesn’t really matter, we don’t have our Carson with us. We spoke with him two days before he was celebrating his birthday with friends on Friday evening.”
Carson’s friend, Jacob Skintges, also paid heartbreaking tribute to the ‘brightest light in the room.’
“I mean, Carson could make anyone laugh at any moment,” he said. “I just want everyone to remember him as that because that’s what he was.”
