A couple has pleaded guilty to participating in a wild spending binge after a bank mistakenly transferred a staggering amount of money into their bank accounts.
According to local media outlets, the amount was outlined to be $10 million, and the couple felt that no one would be questioning the matter. Therefore, they began using the funds like it was their own.
The wild spending binges comprised luxury hotel stays, plenty of casino trips, and whatnot- all at someone else’s expense. But their fantasy bubble soon burst after the bank came back knocking on their door and asking them to return the money immediately or face immediate legal action.
The culprits were recently identified as Hui Leo Gao and his partner in crime named, Kara Hurring. Sources claim the duo went ballistic and started to spend like crazy. It was almost as if they felt the lottery was opened in their favor, and they had every right to use the money to their liking.
So many luxury items and merchandise were retrieved from their residence, while their credit card spending showed how they lived up their lives to the fullest, having no fear of tomorrow.
The incident dates back to 2009, when the couple had applied for a bank overdraft to assist with Gao’s petrol station business in New Zealand. At that time, the loan was approved but what they got was much more than they had initially asked for. And it was all thanks to the bank’s error.
After being caught, the couple denied wrongdoing and said the funds were transferred to them. But that was far from reality. They let their greed for money get the best of them, and their accidental millionaire status truly didn’t last long.
Despite flying out to China to avoid getting caught, they couldn’t do it for much longer as authorities caught on to them.
