‘Sparkle,’ ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ And ‘Fences’ Star Mary Alice DIES At The Age Of 85


Hollywood star Mary Alice, best known as Leticia ‘Lettie’ Bostic on A Different World show, has passed away at the age of 85.

The actress died on Wednesday in New York City but the cause of death is still unknown, the New York Police Department said.

She was a part of a popular film franchise, appearing in 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions as The Oracle alongside Keanu Reeves and played the same role in the video game Enter The Matrix.

The Tony and Emmy winning star stood out for her role as Effie Williams in the musical drama Sparkle.

Mary Alice was born on December 3, 1941 in Indianola Mississippi. When she was 2, she and her family moved to Chicago.

When she became interested in acting, she moved to New York City and worked on stage plays like Street Sounds and The Rat’s Mass.

The star also received a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress for her appearance in the 1987 production of August Wilson’s Fences.

Alice made her screen debut in the 1974 film The Education of Sonny Carson. She also appeared in popular TV shows such as Good Times, Police Woman, and Sanford and Son.

In 1976, she played a small role on the show Serpico.

Her first soap opera came in 1980 when she played Ellie Grant on All My Children. Then, she played Leticia ‘Lettie’ Bostic on A Different World from 1987 to 1989.

More movies followed as she appeared in 1992’s Malcom X and A Perfect World in 1993.

She also won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in the series I’ll Fly Away.

Heartfelt tributes poured in after her death was announced.

Law & Order actress S Epatha Merkerson shared a broken heart emoji while Viola Davis took to Twitter and wrote: “RIP Mary Alice…the original Rose Maxson. You were one of the greatest actresses of all time!! Thank you for the work, inspiration and thank you for Rose. Godspeed Queen.”
