A soap opera icon who appeared in a series of British TV shows has passed away shortly after her devastating diagnosis.
Meg Johnson, 86, died just four months after the death of her husband, Charles Foster, and just years after she was diagnosed with dementia.
The legendary actress was best known for portraying Pearl Ladderbanks in 760 episodes of Emmerdale. Among the most notable of her 33 acting credits are also her appearances in 31 episodes of Brookside, 78 episodes of Coronation Street, and 13 episodes of Yanks Go Home.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that actress Meg Johnson passed away peacefully yesterday evening surrounded by her family,” Meg’s family wrote in a joint statement.
“Meg was a kind and wonderful lady, full of warmth and always with a twinkle in her eye. Meg had an outstanding career that ended with her playing Pearl in Emmerdale.
“Meg had dementia for the last few years, but battled on personally and professionally regardless. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.”
Following the heartbreaking announcement, countless fans and entertainment figures took to social media to pay the “kind” and “beautiful” actress their tributes.
“Sending so much love to the @emmerdale family and family of the late and great Meg Johnson,” Meg’s Emmerdale co-star Gemma Oaten penned.
“A beautiful woman inside and out, who was always so kind to me during my #Emmerdale days. I’m sure Shirley, Freddie, Richard and Co will take good care of her up there RIP lovely Meg x.”
“RIP Meg, she was a wonderful actress and was fabulous as Pearl. Always glamorous, and always had heart. Lovely lady, my thoughts are with her family,” one fan expressed.
Another wrote: “So heartbreaking I loved her in Emmerdale as Peal. She’ll be sorely missed RIP Meg.”
A third said: “Heartbreaking news. Thinking of Meg’s family and friends at this sad time thank you for legendary Pearl she was a fantastic character.”
