The sister of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims has spoken out and slammed Netflix after the streaming giant made a drama series about the notorious serial killer.
Titled ‘Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’, the series recalls the crimes of the notorious cannibalistic murderer who killed 17 boys and men over the period of 13 years before his arrest in 1991.
The 10-part story, which premiered on Netflix on September 21, is largely told from the points of view of the serial killer’s victims.
While the series has received plenty of positive reviews, it has also suffered a major backlash over fears about how the reenactments might affect the victims’ families.
Among the critics of the show is Rita Isbell, the sister of 19-year-old Errol Lindsey who was murdered by the serial killer following their meeting at a Milwaukee mall, who accused Netflix of making money off of the tragedy.
Back in 1992, Isbell famously appeared in court where she screamed at the killer and threatened to kill him – a scene that was very closely reenacted in the new Netflix series.
“I could understand it if they gave some of the money to the victims’ children. Not necessarily their families – I mean, I’m old, I’m very, very comfortable – but the victims have children and grandchildren,” Isbell wrote in an essay for Insider.
“If the show benefited them in some way, it wouldn’t feel so harsh and careless. It’s sad that they’re just making money off of this tragedy. That’s just greed.”
She added: “The episode with me was the only part I saw. I didn’t watch the whole show. I don’t need to watch it. I lived it. I know exactly what happened.”
