A beloved American singer and songwriter who had been battling depression for several years has passed away.
Coco Lee, who was born in Hong Kong, died at the age of 48 in the days following her suicide attempt, her sisters Nancy and Carol Lee revealed.
According to the two siblings, their sister’s mental health condition had worsened drastically over the last few months and the singer tried to take her own life over the weekend.
While the ‘Before I Fall in Love’ hitmaker survived the weekend, she died on Wednesday after being rushed to the hospital in a coma.
“Although CoCo sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her,” the family said in a joint statement.
“CoCo is also known to have worked tirelessly to open up a new world for Chinese singers in the international music scene, and she went all out to shine for the Chinese. We are proud of her!”
The devastating news comes months after Coco’s last social media post in which she admitted to struggling internally by saying life felt “unbearable.”
Lee rose to fame in the 1990s after her namesake album became one of the best-selling records in Asia. While she was initially known as a Mandopop star, the singer eventually branched out and entered the US music industry with her first English album Just No Other Way in 1999.
In 2001, Coco performed the song ‘A Love Before Time’ at the Oscars after the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon soundtrack was nominated for Best Original Song.
In the following two decades, Coco went on to release a series of albums and singles with her latest single – Tragic – hitting the charts in February this year.
Lee is survived by her two sisters, two stepdaughters, and businessman husband Bruce Rockowitz.
