A sheriff known for cracking down on illegal drugs was forced to arrest his own daughter for trafficking meth.
38-year-old Kristen Kent from Florida was arrested by deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.
Speaking to WMMB News, Sheriff Tony ‘A.J.’ Smith said: “It’s heartbreaking, the last person you ever want to arrest is one of your family members, especially your child – I mean it’s like you can’t even put it into words.”
“I don’t think it’s anything you wish on your worst enemy to do something like this,” he added.
According to the Miami Herald, the bust occurred when officers from Smith’s unit conducted a ‘controlled buy’ that involved his daughter.
“She delivered two ounces and that’s when she was arrested,” Smith said.
His daughter faces charges of trafficking meth of 14 grams or over, cocaine possession, and drug possession or use, the sheriff’s department reported.
Kent posted a bond of $25,000 while another woman, who was also arrested, posted bail at $50,000.
Speaking to community members about how to approach family members who have been affected by drug addiction, he said: “Drugs that ruin families. Here’s a prime example of what it does to our communities, what it does to our families, what it does to our friends,”
The sheriff said that he will use the same approach with his own daughter that he advocates for other families impacted by meth.
“The last thing you want to see is your child in an orange jumpsuit with handcuffs on,” the sheriff said.
“Methamphetamine does not discriminate & neither do we. It does not matter who you are, no one is immune or exempt,” he wrote on Facebook.
“Our hearts break over the grief meth causes all, whether you use it, sell it or love someone who is involved with it.”
