A politician has sparked outrage after vowing to attend an “abolish the monarchy” protest instead of going to the Queen’s memorial.
Lidia Thorpe is an Australian politician and senator representing the Australian Greens who has been very vocal about protecting the rights of indigenous communities and minorities after being elected the first Aboriginal senator from Victoria.
While her comments are usually met with raised eyebrows across Australia, where the Head of State is King Charles III following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, Thorpe managed to anger the Crown’s loyalists after saying she refuses to attend the memorial set up in the late monarch’s honor in Canberra.
Instead, the senator vowed to attend a healing ceremony and an “Abolish The Monarchy” protest whose organizers branded the Queen as the “longest reigning thief.”
“On September 22, I’ll be mourning our ancestors and our old people who fought in the Frontier Wars and who died fighting for this country,” the politician said in a statement to The Australian.
“After a healing ceremony, I’ll be marching to protest over 500 deaths in custody since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.
“Treaty is the solution to the injustices we face, by bringing people together to end the war that started in 1788.”
The healing ceremony was planned by Djirri Djirri Dancers for the same day the government intends to “pay ‘respects’ to a person living on the other side of the world.”
“We want to reclaim this space for our Sorry Business, as a time to mourn and commemorate our true kings and queens (repurposing those terms as well) and remember them, honor them, commemorate them and heal the community who are struggling through these sad times,” the group announced on their Facebook page.
Following the healing ceremony, the anti-monarchy protest organized by Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance will take place.
As the controversial group announced, similar protests will take place in Victoria and Queensland where demonstrators will march “against racist colonial imperialism.”
“This is a stance against the continued crimes committed against marginalized First Nations, black, brown and Asian communities,” the WAR group wrote.
“We do not support benefactors or Stolenwealth and demand justice, truth and accountability for all. Justice for all.”
