A high school hockey player was fatally injured by a fellow player’s skate after collapsing on the ice.
The freak accident took place in Greenwich, Connecticut, where the hockey team from New Canaan’s St. Luke’s high school was visiting for a junior varsity match with the local team at Brunswick School.
During the game, St. Luke’s 10th-grader Teddy Balkind collapsed and fell on the ice. Unable to stop, a Brunswick player collided with the student and accidentally cut his neck with his skate.
“A player from the other team fell to the ice. Another player who was near the downed player was unable to stop, and collided with the player who fell,” Greenwich Police Captain Mark Zuccarello confirmed in a statement obtained by The Greenwich Times.
Following the Thursday tragedy on the rink, St. Luke’s Head of School Mark Davis addressed the students and parents in a heartbreaking email.
“Our community is mourning. Yesterday, we lost a precious young man in a tragic accident. Both St. Luke’s School and Brunswick School are in shock as we work to support our students and families,” he wrote.
“St. Luke’s singular focus at this moment is to care for our devastated community. Thank you for your concern and for respecting our need to grieve.
“There are no words adequate to this moment, and I know all of us will support each other as best as we can.”
The deceased sophomore was also identified by the New Canaan Police Department who dubbed him an “incredible young man.”
“Teddy skated for the New Canaan Winter Club throughout his youth hockey career and was known to all as an all-around incredible young man, son and brother,” they expressed in a statement.
“The men and women of the New Canaan Police Department offer our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to the Balkind family and all of those impacted by this tragic incident.”
