15 people were killed after a gunman opened fire at an elementary school on Tuesday afternoon.
The mass murder – which represents the deadliest shooting at a US grade school since Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in 2012 – took place at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
According to Gov. Greg Abbott, 14 young students and a teacher were killed after a shooter barricaded himself inside the school and started killing people.
An additional 13 children and a 45-year-old man sustained injuries and had to receive treatment after the shooting.
“He shot and killed, horrifically, incomprehensibly, 14 students and killed a teacher,” Gov. Abbott said. “There are families that are in mourning right now. And the state of Texas is in mourning with them.”
The governor has since also confirmed that two officers were shot by the gunman but are expected to live.
During the shoot-out, the gunman was shot dead by the police. He was later identified as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos.
According to the preliminary reports, Ramos engaged nearby border patrol agents before crashing his pickup truck outside the school and barricading himself inside.
It is also believed that the teenager shot his own grandmother before entering the school and opening fire.
The mass shooting at the small elementary school, which reportedly has less than 600 students, represents one of the deadliest school shootings in the nation’s history and comes just days after 18-year-old Payton Gendron shot and killed ten people at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
President Biden is set to address the nation from the White House at 8.15 pm following his return home from Japan.
