Nearly fifty children were rushed to hospital after a road accident involving a school bus and a tow truck.
The shocking incident took place on Route 115 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, where a school bus carrying 49 children was struck by a tow truck in a head-on collision.
According to the preliminary investigation, 28-year-old driver of the tow truck, Edward Steinmann, is believed to have suffered a “medical episode” that caused him to lose control of his vehicle.
The medical complications resulted in Steinmann crossing the middle of the road and plowing straight into the oncoming bus.
Injured in the accident were also two adults including Steinmann and the driver of the school bus, 53-year-old Suzanne Ent.
While the two drivers suffered moderate injuries, they are expected to make a full recovery.
It was also revealed that another school bus rushed to the scene to pick up the children and take them to the hospital after the crash. The kids suffered minor injuries.
“Although this was an unfortunate event we are grateful there were no serious injuries,” the Pennsylvania State Police said in a statement.
“We wish everyone a speedy recovery. We’d like to thank the good citizens who stopped to render aid.”
Bear Creek Community Charter School CEO Jim Smith added: “I’d also like to reinforce that the parents, bystanders and school staff rallied to support the students. I am looking forward to the results of the ongoing investigation.
“We thank the police and STA and the bus company blessed with a phenomenal level of cooperation among all entities that showed through today.”
