A top Russian general was killed near the Ukrainian city of Izyum, Kharkiv, during a Ukrainian artillery strike.
Suffering a major blow to its ranks, the Russian army has now lost its ninth general since the beginning of the invasion back in February.
According to the reports, 55-year-old Major General Anton Simonov, a leading electronic warfare specialist, was killed in an artillery strike on a Russian command post in the Kharkiv Oblast.
Following the general’s death, the reports were confirmed by Russian authorities who paid a tribute to Simonov and branded him as a “true patriot.”
“[He was] a true patriot, a brave and courageous man [who] honestly and to the end fulfilled his military and human duty,” St Petersburg governor Alexander Beglov said.
Spreading anti-Ukrainian propaganda, the governor went on to say that Simonov “died the death of the brave in battle against Ukrainian nationalists.”
So far, nine Russian generals, along with 36 colonels, hundreds of officers, and tens of thousands of soldiers have been killed by fierce Ukrainian resistance.
Among the killed generals are Major General Andrei Sukhovetsky, the deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of the Central Military District, Major General Vitaly Gerasimov, the Russia’s 41st army first deputy commander, General Magomed Tushaev, the head of the notorious Chechen special forces, and Major General Andrei Kolesnikov, the Commander of the 29th Combined Army.
Joining the ranks of high-ranking Russian military figures killed in Putin’s war on Ukraine are also Major General Oleg Mityaev, Lt Gen Yakov Rezantsev, Lt Gen Andrey Mordvichev, and Major General Vladimir Frolov.
