Russian airstrike saw 30 missiles strike Ukrainian barracks in Yavoriv, which is just six miles from the Polish border. Three British former paratroopers were at Yavoriv military base when the missiles struck. It is believed that they have been killed near the Polish border.

Reports suggest the three individuals died instantly in the cruise missile blasts, along with more than a hundred others. Sources have confirmed the three men were not part of the foreign fighters unit that was being trained at the now destroyed Yavoriv base.

Several Brit veterans narrowly escaped death in the attack just 11 miles from NATO territory. Hundreds of western volunteers were packed into a building close to barracks hit by rockets, a source revealed.

An unnamed source said: “A hundred yards difference you would be looking at hundreds of western casualties. There were so many passports in there British, Brazilian, Canadian, American, you name it.”

“It was like the Star Wars canteen. There were gun nuts, biker gangs, tough guys, American religious people there to do God’s work, war addicts.” the source added.

Russian spies are believed to have infiltrated a group of foreign fighters and provided information from a Ukrainian military base that was targeted by Vladimir Putin in an airstrike.

Intelligence chiefs are investigating whether a Russian spy claiming to be an international volunteer for Ukraine was feeding information to the Kremlin before the attack.

A source told the newspaper that a Ukrainian Army guard at the military base saw a man, believed to be carrying a laptop, running from the base before the strikes hit.

The former British Army soldiers believed to be killed in the strikes traveled to Ukraine after having served in the Parachute Regiment’s first and second battalions known as 1 Para and 2 Para. They are believed to have been living in an accommodation block at the Yavoriv garrison when the Russian rockets struck.

Most of the missiles, fired by long-range bombers in Russian airspace, were shot down by Ukraine’s air defense systems, but eight made it through, slamming into barracks at the base where western forces were training local soldiers just before the war began.

Rumors spread that foreign fighters were among the dead and 134 injured but the legion’s spokesman said none of its members were hurt. But the source said the attack had been a blow to the legion because dozens of volunteers later fled the base, he said: “I think they had a shock when they realized what this is really about. It’s one thing talking tough.”

The camp was being used to train foreign fighters and to store weapons given to Ukraine by the UK and other allies. The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) refused to comment on reports of British deaths.

Sources said they were urgently investigating the incident at Yavoriv and working with the Ukrainian authorities to establish further information.

Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for Russia’s ministry of defense, said the base was struck by “long-range, high-precision” weapons because it was hosting “foreign mercenaries and a large shipment of foreign weapons”. He added: “The destruction of foreign mercenaries who arrived on the territory of Ukraine will continue.”

Konashenkov said up to 180 people had been killed in the strike, though Ukraine initially said 35 people died and another 134 were wounded.

But a source told The Mirror today: “There were many more killed within the site than has been claimed and bodies are still being found. I do not believe the three British ex-military personnel would have known anything about it, fortunately.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky gave another rousing speech by video to his people, reminding them that yesterday was Volunteer Day “our purely Ukrainian holiday”.

Millions across Ukraine have joined groups to help the war effort by making anti-tank defenses or doing weapons training, Zelensky praised them as “prerequisites for the liberation of our entire country.”
