Russia has renewed its threats of nuclear war as the conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate.
Lashing out at the West, State Duma Chairman Viacheslav Volodin warned there will be nothing left of Europe should Ukraine’s allies assist the embattled nation by supplying them with missiles.
The warning comes shortly after Radoslaw Sikorski, Poland’s foreign minister, called on the West to send more weapons to Kyiv as the battle continues to rage on in Donbas.
Sikorski accused Russia of violating the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances and suggested nuclear weapons could be delivered to Ukraine by the West to “give Ukraine the opportunity to defend its independence.”
As part of the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons, Ukraine agreed to give up on its nuclear weapons and did so by 1996.
Lashing out at Sikorski’s comments, the State Duma head and Kremlin mouthpiece warned of a nuclear conflict that will wipe out entire Europe.
“With such deputies, the Europeans will have much more serious problems than those they have already faced today (refugees, record inflation, energy crisis),” Volodin said on Telegram.
“Sikorski is provoking a nuclear conflict in the center of Europe.”
He added: “He doesn’t think neither about the future of Ukraine nor about the future of Poland. In case his suggestions are fulfilled, these countries will cease to exist, as will Europe as well.
“Sikorski and the like are the reason why Ukraine must not only be set free from the Nazi ideology but also be demilitarized, securing the nuclear-weapon-free status of the country.”
