More concerning reports are emerging from embattled Ukraine amid Putin’s invasions and the advancement of Russian troops.
In recent days, it has been revealed that Russian troops are firing on civilians and shelling populated areas, schools, and hospitals with no regard for civilian casualties.
Repeatedly, the invaders also violated ceasefire agreements, halting the evacuation efforts of the Ukrainian people.
Now, it has been alleged that Russian troops are holding Ukrainian civilians, including women and children, hostage in a bid to use them as human shields.
As one distressed mother told the Daily Mail, her daughter-in-law, who was sheltering in the basement of her home together with her husband and their children, had called her only to tell her that her son had been kidnapped by Russian soldiers.
“My daughter-in-law called me and said he had been taken as a hostage. She said they came into the basement, told her and the children to leave but ordered all the men to remain,” 67-year-old Alla told the publication.
“All the men and the elderly people who could not walk had to stay. Maybe they are using them as human shields like the Germans once did.”
As the woman added, her daughter-in-law was allowed to leave but had to walk for several miles with her children to reach the main road.
On the following day, her husband managed to call her using a phone that the Russians failed to seize when they searched him. While he told her that he was unharmed, the man revealed he and the others were being held captive and prohibited from leaving the village.
“I just hope he can run away but where will he run? It is all taken by the Russians. There is no end to this horror,” Alla added.
Alla’s story is one of many reports suggesting Russian troops are keeping civilian hostages.
As one woman from Zhytomyr revealed according to Iryna Badanova of the Department for the Release of Prisoners, she was taken hostage by the invaders alongside two dozen other people.
The group is reportedly being held at a kindergarten and was told that they would be used as a human shield.
“There were elderly people, children, women. They were not made any demands, they were just told ‘we will use you as a human shield,’” Badanova said.
Similar reports are coming in from the town of Gostomel where Russians took several hostages including two women and their young children.
“These people were taken straight from the apartments. Then they were allowed to return to the apartments, take warm clothes and food so that they could be taken to Russia,” Badanova explained.
Meanwhile, the Sumy Regional Administration head, Dmitry Zhivitskyy, alleged that Russian soldiers have taken civilian hostages to use them as human shields to protect their resources, weapons, and armored vehicles.
Confirming these terrifying reports was also Hanna Mokrousova of the human rights group known as ‘Blue Bird’ who said dozens of Ukrainian families pleaded for help after their family members were taken hostage.
“From the information we are getting we see that civilians are taken hostages. We don’t know how many but it is definitely happening. We have information about women as well as men being taken,” she said.
“Russia has always taken a lot of civilians as hostage. They did it on the temporarily occupied territories of Donbas before to exchange for the captured soldiers, so they might use the same tactics now.
“We’ve been watching Russia fighting across the globe for many years and they always use civilians. They use them as human shields and they attack civilian infrastructure. This is not a novelty. It’s how Russia operates in military conflicts.”
