Russian forces have bombed a Ukrainian theater that became a temporary home to hundreds of civilians including children.

Amid Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and a brutal assault on the port city of Mariupol, several hundred residents took refuge in Mariupol Drama Theatre to escape the shelling of residential areas.

In hopes of deterring the Russians from attacking the theater, the refugees wrote the word ‘children’ in Russian outside the building.

On Wednesday, however, it has come to light that the theater was reduced to rubble during a Russian bombing, whereas a large part of the building was razed to the ground.

“More than a thousand people were hiding there but the probability of getting there to dismantle the rubble is low due to constant shelling and bombing of the city,” Mariupol mayor adviser, Petro Andruishchenko, told CNN.

While the exact number of dead civilians at the theater can’t be confirmed at this time, it is believed that several hundred people died in the bombing.

The attack comes after Russian authorities insisted that only strategic military locations are being targeted despite indisputable proof that the military is shelling and bombing civilian areas.

In response to these unprovoked and unjustifiable attacks, the UN has called for an emergency Security Council meeting that is set to take place today.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government confirmed that Russian troops opened fire on civilians who were promised a safe escape from the city of Zaporizhzhia.
