The Russian military has reportedly bombed a school where four hundred civilians were sheltering.
As Putin’s attack on Ukraine and its sovereignty continues, the port city of Mariupol has been taking on some of the heaviest bombing in the country.
According to the local authorities, Russia has now also targeted an art school where around 400 Ukrainian people took refuge after the city was besieged.
“So far, there is no exact operational data on how many people were hiding in the shelter or the number of casualties. I expect we will have it later today. But the situation is difficult and there is nowhere to get the data from,” mayor’s adviser Petro Andrushenko said.
While the city council confirmed there were likely around four hundred civilians in the school at the time of the Russian airstrike, hundreds could still remain trapped under the rubble as of this moment.
Due to heavy shelling in the city, it is unclear when or how a rescue operation will take place.
The concerning reports come just four days after a Russian airstrike destroyed a Mariupol theater where some 1,300 people, including children, were hiding.
In an attempt to prevent the building from being destroyed, civilians engraved the word ‘children’ onto the pavement on both sides of the building.
Last Wednesday, however, it has come to light that the shelter was reduced to rubble during a Russian airstrike.
“More than a thousand people were hiding there but the probability of getting there to dismantle the rubble is low due to constant shelling and bombing of the city,” Andrushenko previously told CNN.
Four days later, it is still unclear how many people survived the bombing of the theater, whereas some estimates suggest there were only some 130 survivors.
“The city continues to be shelled both from the sky and the sea. It seems the occupiers are so eager to wipe out Mariupol that they are ready to cover themselves with fire,” Andrushenko said on Sunday.
