Author Salman Rushdie has reportedly been stabbed up to 15 times, just moments before he began to give a speech in upstate New York recently.
According to local media outlets, the 75-year-old was immediately airlifted after the startling incident, where the attacker even managed to get as close as his neck.
Horrified witnesses stood in shock as they saw his blood splatter in all directions.
“He was attacked so brutally. He was stabbed and punched up to 15 times, the attacker really got him bad”- mentioned one startled eyewitness present at the scene.
The exact venue of the attack was identified as the literary fair in Chautauqua in New York, which is reportedly located near Buffalo.
Those that were located at the event managed to pin down the attacker, alongside assistance from cops hailing from the state’s police department. Hence, authorities have now confirmed that they do indeed have one man in custody but failed to unveil his description just yet.
Blood spatter was located across the stage, showing the nature of the brutal and gruesome attack that has many still in absolute shock.
“The floor, the stage, the chairs, everything was covered in blood”- mentioned another witness at the sight of the stage.
At the moment, the author’s agency did confirm the attack, adding how he is currently going through surgery for his many injuries. But he failed to reveal any new updates regarding his current condition.
Rushdie was called out in the past for writing down a series of satanic verses that began a rather controversial cultural war as many felt the work went against their beliefs. The incident dates back to the year 1988 in the United Kingdom, where he was even issued a fatwa by Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini in February of 1989.
