The World Health Organization has left many people stunned around the globe after it mentioned its decision to immediately rename the monkeypox virus because the term is racist.
According to local media reports, the virus is known for its two recognized types and they both hail from the African regions. Therefore, scientists are now arguing that linking this particular illness with these regions in Africa is beyond racist and discriminatory and that is why the WHO must act swiftly.
Therefore we are seeing urgent calls being released for the renaming process that is non-stigmatizing and non-discriminatory simultaneously.
The WHO has promised so many people around the globe that it feels the new name needs to come on an urgent basis before the situation gets out of hand.
For those who may not be aware, the virus is known as a rash-causing virus that is endemic to the African sub-continent.
Now, sources have gone on to mention how the actual pathogen has plenty of strains that are more likely to be lettered with an A or a B so that there is no mentioning of a part of Africa in the name, where the virus was detected at the start.
On average, 30 different researchers had signed a petition last week that boldly stated how there was an urgent need for change because of the way the virus is outbreaking around the globe. Moreover, the most number of cases that are being witnessed is in gay and bisexual men.
Only recently we heard of the United Kingdom reporting hundreds of cases and it has really raised a major alarm.
More than 45 different nations have been involved in this disease and the numbers continue to increase, as mentioned by the WHO recently.
