A woman’s body has been found in a refrigerator and her family said she was wrapped in plastic “like a piece of steak”
Sherbert “Strawberry” Maddox, 40, was shot before being wrapped in blankets and plastic and placed in the refrigerator. Her body was discovered in her former boyfriend’s fridge and investigators say she may have been dead for days before her body was found.
A video show officers taking what appeared to be parts of the fridge out of a home after the body of Sherbert was discovered early March 22. Cops said a Rhode Island man allegedly killed his girlfriend, wrapped her body in towels and plastic, then stuffed the corpse in the refrigerator of his apartment.
Nathan Cooper, 53, Sherbert’s boyfriend, was slapped with a murder charge for the killing of Sherbert after police found her body inside the Providence apartment. Police were called to the home in Providence, Rhode Island after the victim’s uncle, Marvin Maddox, was tipped off.
Marvin said: “I was at work and I got a call from one of my friends that said your niece might be in trouble. We called the police and sure enough, she was upstairs wrapped up in a refrigerator. And they brought him out, and it’s sad, you know, she didn’t deserve to go like that.”
Police said they were first called to the apartment on a tip, then obtained a search warrant. Authorities said Sherbert appeared to have been fatally shot and could have been dead for two or more days.
Sharmane Jackson, Sherbert’s cousin told WJAR: “My mom called me this morning and let me know that her boyfriend killed her and put her in the refrigerator like a piece of steak.”
Cops told the Providence Journal that Nathan allegedly had violent tendencies. According to the newspaper, Cooper apparently had prior convictions and a pattern of domestic violence with Sherbert.
Relatives of Sherbert were left struggling to come to grips with the shocking end of their loved ones. Nakia Maddox Pigues, Sherbert’s sister, said: “I want the world to know that justice will be served for my sister. You took a part of my family that we can never get back. Your day is coming.”
Family members gathered in a courtroom on March 23 as Nathan met with a judge, and some could not contain their emotions. One woman was caught on camera shouting expletives at the accused killer: “You killed my sister!”
The courtroom had to be cleared before Nathan could be brought back in. He did not enter a plea and is being held without bail. A memorial for Sherbert had significantly grown in size, family and friends gathered to pay tribute to a life cut short.
Sharmane said: “I hope she’s in heaven looking down. I hope she’s one of my angels. Everybody loved her.” Marvin added: “Just know that everybody loved her.”
