International search and rescue teams rush to Turkey and Syria to help search for more survivors after the countries were hit by a devastating earthquake.
Officials said over 3,800 people have died and hundreds are still buried under collapsed buildings.
At least 1,000 rescuers from all over the world joined rescue teams looking for victims beneath the rubble in freezing temperatures.
UK relief worker Atiqur Rahman, who was working in Turkey and managed to escape with injuries, said: “The only way I can describe it is armageddon. There are people stuck, screaming; children dead. There are people dead in the streets. There is no electricity or gas. People are building fires on street corners.
“It’s freezing. They’re sleeping in bus shelters or under trees, anywhere away from buildings. One in three buildings have been totally knocked down.”
The 37-year-old said that they are doing everything they can to look for people. “I’ve been in bombed cities but nothing compares to this,” he added. “This is total destruction.”
On Monday evening, 2,379 had been killed in Turkey and 13,293 were injured. At least 1,444 were dead in Syria, taking the total fatalities in both countries to 3,823.
Geological experts warned that the death toll could reach 10,000 as extreme low temperatures and rain storms add more problems in the aftermath of the earthquake.
Turkish President Recep Erdogan said: “Because the debris removal efforts are continuing in many buildings, we do not know how high the number of dead and injured will rise.”
Describing the heartbreaking scenes, Turkey’s legislator of Hatay province Huseyin Yayman said: “Many are trapped. Many buildings are damaged.
“People are on the streets. It’s raining, it’s winter.”
