Queen Elizabeth emotionally said her last words to Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh, at the memorial service.
Queen Elizabeth II joined Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Kate Middleton, and the rest of the royal family to pay tribute to the life of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, at a memorial service.
The Queen was seen shedding a tear for Prince Philip at the service in remembrance of his life of service to Britain. The 95-year-old monarch appeared emotional at the thanksgiving service for the life of the Duke of Edinburgh who passed away aged 99 in April 2021.
The Queen was escorted to the service at Westminster Abbey by her son Prince Andrew, who was making his first public appearance since settling his recent sex case with Virginia Giuffre.
She had initially walked arm-in-arm with Andrew before making the final few steps alone as she reached the end of the aisle. Prince Charles has also visibly overcome with emotion and wiped his eyes as his father’s life was honored at a special mass in Westminster Abbey.
The pair sat side by side at the poignant ceremony, the Queen’s first major official engagement outside one of her homes for nearly six months. The monarch has only attended one major event with the public since her stay in the hospital last October due to health concerns.
The ailing Queen is said to be suffering from mobility issues but is “too proud” to be seen with a wheelchair in public. It is understood that the final decision on her attendance at the said event was only made first thing this morning when Buckingham Palace confirmed it.
The monarch is said to have entered the historic church through the side entrance to shorten her walk.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, along with their two oldest children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, sat in the row behind as they listened to tributes to the late Duke.
The Dean of Westminster delivered a moving speech about the Duke of Edinburgh, telling the 1,800-strong congregation: “He would hate to think that I should paint a picture of him as a “plaster saint”, someone without the usual human foibles and failings.”
“He was far too self-aware ever to be taken in by flattery. Of course, it must be said that his life bore the marks of sacrifice and service. Certainly, he could show great sympathy and kindness. There is no doubt that he had a delightfully engaging, and often self-deprecating, sense of humor,” the dean added.
Hundreds of people including nearly 30 foreign royals, politicians, and scores of representatives from Philip’s charities are gathering for the special thanksgiving service in honor of the country’s longest-serving consort.
The service allowed many of the duke’s wishes for his funeral to finally be fulfilled. In line with government guidelines at the time, there was no congregational singing at the funeral service for the Duke of Edinburgh in April 2021.
Songs that had been chosen by Prince Philip before the pandemic were sung by the choir and congregation at the ceremony, including Te Deum in C by Benjamin Britten and Guide me, O thou great Redeemer.
The service was attended with the National Anthem. Before exiting the abbey, the Queen thanked those who spoke, including Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award holder, Doyin Shonibare, and the clergy who took the service for her late husband.
